About the Artist

Amber Gatlin, Performer – Sex Work/Sex Play

Tell me about the play you are working on for Emerging Artists Theatre. What do you love most about this play?

I love the way this play engages with so many elements that come with love and dating today. Jentis’s witty humor reminded me of the great sitcoms I grew up on and kept me reading at the end of my seat!

What do you love most about the role you are playing? What is the most challenging aspect of the work for you?

I loved Cassidy immediately. She is so many contradictions gracefully rolled up in one perfectly imperfect human. The challenge with this role is exploring her relationship to her mother. I’ve always been close with my mom, and Cassidy is, too, but she doesn’t feel understood by her mother. Exploring that relationship and the way it changes feels like the heartbeat of the play for me.

Is there anything important or meaningful about this piece to you?

I think it’s so important to lead with more honesty and less shame in the world of love and sex. These characters are all figuring it out together, and I think laughing with them is a great way to give ourselves some grace as we navigate this silly world.
